Two East Catholic High School Students Recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program

Irene Soteriou of Middletown and Paige Plucker of Glastonbury both received letters of achievement from the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Soteriou was named as a Semifinalist in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program. Soteriou’s academic achievement on the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) allows her to join a nationwide pool representing less than one percent of high school seniors including the highest scoring entrants in each state. She is one of approximately 16,000 National Merit Semifinalists who will compete for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth over $31 million to be awarded next spring.

Soteriou is a four-year member of East Catholic’s Student Government Executive Board. She is also a member of the National Honor Society, Mock Trial, and the Debate Club. Soteriou founded and is co-president of East Catholic’s Club Med dedicated to exploring the field of medicine. Soteriou is a three-year participant in cross country and received numerous awards for her academic achievements at East Catholic. Outside of school, Soteriou is a volunteer at the Glastonbury Health Care Center and is an assistant instructor at Sunday Greek School at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in New Britain.

Plucker was named as a Commended Student in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program. Approximately 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation receive recognition for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who enter the 2019 competition by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

Plucker is the East Catholic All-School Secretary. She is a member of the National Honor Society and serves as the school’s president. Plucker contributes to ECLAT, East Catholic’s Literary Magazine and is a frequent speaker at school assemblies and events. Plucker has taken flute lessons for many years and is a member of East Catholic’s Liturgical Choir. She is a STRETCH Service Leader (East Catholic’s community service program) and volunteers at Foodshare in Windsor, CT.
