Five East Catholic High School Students Named as Commended Students in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program

October 2, 2019 – Five East Catholic High School students have been named as Commended Students by the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. They include Catherine Cannamela of Wethersfield, Julia Cannamela of Wethersfield, Maya Gopal of South Windsor, Lily Moseni of South Windsor and Pratham Patel of Manchester.

The program, which recognized about 34,000 students throughout the nation, honors students with exceptional academic promise. The scholastically talented seniors will be presented with a Letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). 

“The students being recognized have shined bright at East Catholic High School throughout their academic careers,” says Thomas E. Maynard, Head of East Catholic High School. “Their praise on a national level is well-deserved.” 

Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2020 competition by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).

“Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success," commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success."
