Visual Arts
Elements of Art
Students form a solid foundation by learning the major elements of art—line, shape, color, value, form, texture, and space.
Principles of Design
Students use various media and techniques to explore the major principles of design—balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, and unity. They draw upon four art disciplines: art production, art history, art criticism, and aesthetics.
Drawing
Students learn technique, composition, value, line, and the illusion of form with a variety of media. Advanced students create a portfolio of their studies.
Painting
Through the use of historical art references and experimentation with different painting media, students continue their studies of drawing, composition, and color to learn the skill of painting.
Sculpture
Our sculpture course allows students to express themselves through a range of three-dimensional media including paper, wire, plaster, and clay.

Media Arts
East Catholic tenth through twelfth graders enjoy our media arts program. We are proud to offer the following advanced courses at ECHS:
Digital Art and Design
Students produce and manipulate digital photographs and combine text and images to create advertisements for magazines or books.
Graphic Design
Students use various methods to create and combine symbols, images, and/or words to create a visual representation of ideas and messages.
Digital Animation
Students learn the principles of animation to produce strong, authentic animations by learning to gain a sense of observation, timing, and motion. We push the boundaries of the imagination and familiarize students with storytelling.
Video
Through hands-on, real-world exercises and projects, students gain an introduction to the environment of a contemporary video production workflow. The class progresses through all the key phases of video production, including camera settings, lighting, and video production techniques.
Digital Photography
Students in this class discover an appreciation for photography as they gain a comprehensive understanding of the principles of digital photography. Students study the methods of portraying light from candid situations to creating dynamic studio landscapes, as well as learn how to digitally edit and print their own photographs.
